World's First! CIMC SOE delivered 3,000m³ liquid ammonia fuel tank
2025-07-11

Recently, Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (CIMC SOE) achieved a historic milestone: the world’s first 3,000-cubic-meter liquid ammonia fuel tank (Project T198), developed for a 210,000-DWT ammonia-powered bulk carrier built by Qingdao Shuangrui and Beihai Shipyard, was successfully loaded and shipped to the shipyard. This breakthrough marks CIMC SOE’s pivotal advancement in manufacturing critical equipment for clean-energy vessels.

Project T198 Lifting Operation

The newly delivered liquid ammonia fuel tank represents the world’s first large-scale marine ammonia fuel storage equipment designed, constructed, and delivered globally. The project comprises ten ship sets, each equipped with two independent Type C tanks boasting a single-unit capacity of 3,000 cubic meters. Its scale and the welding performance of materials used set industry benchmarks. As a promising "carbon-free" marine fuel, ammonia produces zero CO₂ during combustion. Its large-scale adoption is vital for the shipping industry to meet the IMO’s emission reduction targets. The successful delivery of these tanks lays a solid foundation for the commercial operation of ammonia-fueled vessels.

Project T198 Shipment

As the inaugural product in this pioneering global project, the T198 development faced unprecedented challenges. The team spearheaded innovations from "0 to 1," overcoming technical hurdles including new material applications, complex welding processes, precision heating control, and stringent safety standards. Through rigorous engineering and relentless dedication, they resolved critical bottlenecks in materials and manufacturing, delivering the first tank on time with exceptional quality. This accomplishment not only demonstrates CIMC SOE’s design and manufacturing prowess but also embodies the team’s spirit of innovation, accountability, and pursuit of excellence.

With the global shipping industry accelerating its green transition, demand for vessels powered by clean fuels like ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol is set to surge. Building on this milestone, CIMC SOE will expand R&D and innovation in clean energy storage and transportation equipment, enhancing core competitiveness and delivery capabilities. Committed to providing safer, more efficient, and eco-friendly offshore solutions, CIMC SOE will collaborate with industry partners to advance sustainable shipping and contribute to preserving our blue oceans and skies.
